The global pandemic outbreak has exposed the capacity and capability shortcomings in global health care systems, such as limited inpatient capacity at hospitals, shortages of medical professionals, insufficient capacity to diagnose and treat severe cases, and an imperfect reporting system. This has accelerated in a shift from traditional health care to digital, cyber and data-driven health care. Technological innovations – smartphone applications, 5G, big data, artificial intelligence – are coming together to battle against the worst health crisis of recent times. Chinese tech companies are leapfrogging ahead thanks to a well-established technological ecosystem, high penetration of smartphones and much-needed reforms to the health care sector. In Southeast Asia, health care innovation is accelerating rapidly through government policies and investments. This session will discuss how Southeast Asia can learn from China and vice versa to achieve a modern digitised healthcare system. Where are the hidden growth and investment opportunities? How will the startup ecosystem shape the healthtech sector in the near term?
