While they were once a major contributor to the global economy, the business travel and tourism industry has been upended by the pandemic. This resulted in many cancelled flights, empty hotel rooms, cancelled meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions (MICE) and millions of lost jobs in 2020. With lockdown restrictions, travel bans and quarantines in place, many countries in Southeast Asia are focusing on attracting local tourists to maintain economic stability. When will travelling be possible again and will business travellers need a digital immunity passport to travel? Should Covid-19 vaccination be mandatory for foreign business travellers to board international flights? How will airports and hotels re-build confidence in travellers? How will touchless technology, robots and facial recognition systems help shape the business travel and tourism experience post-covid? What can Southeast Asian countries learn from China’s travel recovery? What travel regulations will help kick start recovery, support travel and tourism related SMEs and ensure a healthier travel and tourism sector in the long term?
